The concept of sustainable architecture was used as a starting point in the construction of two innovative, high performance and energy efficient structures. The completed buildings both situated in Belgium, demonstrate the technologies developed and introduced by Dow Corning and comprise of a 32,000m2 distribution centre at Feluy, and a research facility at Seneffe. The main entrance of the distribution centre is glazed with a transparent structural silicone adhesive [TSSA], created for point fixing within glazing and highly effective in extending a building’s durability and efficiency. Building Integrated Photovoltaic technology is also demonstrated by the use of PV modules which act as sunscreens for the windows, negating the need for internal coolers, and doubling as energy generators. As a result, projected heating and electricity costs are expected to be lower than conventional construction costs by 75% and 70% respectively.

It was decided that the gently curved external walls required a reliable supply of mortar and also the main academy walls needed mortar coloured to compliment the yellow brickwork. The stone faced wings of the building called for a contrasting coloured mortar. These aesthetics were achieved by using black for the stone faced areas and yellow for the remaining brickwork.

The intended mortar is being produced in portable mixing stations with a mixing capacity of 35 tonnes of dry mortar. When connected to water and power supplies the mixer produces a perfect blend of mortar and colour
