When woody biomass and agricultural residue combusts or decomposes, large amounts of carbon dioxide are produced. Biochar occurs naturally on forest floors after wildfires, due to layers of smouldering vegetation.

There is a real possibility that Biochar could help to tackle human development issues like hunger and food insecurity. That’s not all, it may be a solution to low agricultural productivity, deforestation, soil depletion and biodiversity loss. It could assist with reducing energy poverty, water pollution,air pollution and climate change.

In Europe, around 90% of Biochar is utilised within animal farming in litter, feeding or treatment of slurry, and when applied here there is a reduction in smell. Used as a feed supplement, farmers report less diarrhoea, improved feed intake and reduced allergies, with animals becoming calmer overall. German researchers carried out an experiment in a dairy troubled by common health issues. These included fertility and production disorders, inflammation of urinary bladder, viscous salivas, and diarrhoea. They found that when Biochar was used as a feed supplement it had a significant tonic effect on cow health.

A really exciting revelation is that Biochar is great when used as insulation in buildings, due to its very low thermal conductivity. Biochar can also absorb six times its own weight in water. When combined with clay, lime or cement mortar, it can regulate humidity. This material can be added to clay at a ratio of up to 50%, and can even replace the sand used in mortar. Biochar is ideal for plaster used indoors providing excellent insulation and breathing properties. Humidity levels can be regulated and maintained at 45–70% throughout the year.

There are several positive factors here, as dry air that can cause allergies and respiratory problems is prevented. Dampness and condensing air are also avoided, cutting out mould growth etc. Damp and condensation within homes is a major issue for many across the UK.

Plaster that Adsorbs Troublesome Toxins & Smells

Biochar-mud plaster adsorbs smells and toxins, making it extremely popular in schools, warehouses, factories, hospitals, libraries and agricultural buildings. It is highly effective in this respect for improving conditions for workers, and delivering a more pleasant work environment. Biochar is an efficient adsorber of electromagnetic radiation, and biochar-mud plaster will prevent “electrosmog”. Mixed with lime it may be applied via a jet-spray to the outside walls of buildings.

Thicknesses of up to 20 cm, allow it to act as a substitute for Styrofoam insulation, turning the house into a sort of carbon sink. When treated in this way, the structure also has a healthy indoor climate. If the house is eventually demolished, the biochar-mud or biochar-lime plaster can be recycled and used as a valuable compost additive. These are just a few of the possible applications, as Biochar is also perfect as a wastewater treatment, textile additive, decontaminant and soil conditioner.
