In an effort to raise awareness about electrical fires and how to avoid them, a recent campaign was launched. Electrical Fire Safety Week brought together fire an rescue services, the Governments ‘Fire Kills’ campaign and the Electrical Safety Council in an effort to inform the public about electrical fire hazards and the importance of taking preventative measures. Figures show that approximately 70 people are killed and 350,000 serious injuries are a result of electrical accidents. One of the main areas around the home to consider when thinking about fire prevention is the kitchen. A significant proportion of fires in the home start here with cookers and other electrical equipment left on after use. There may be kitchen appliances with damaged, frayed or exposed wiring, which are a dangerous hazard, particularly when coming into contact with heat or water.
One of the recommendations was to ensure homes have a working smoke alarm on every level of the building. Smoke alarms save many lives by giving vital minutes to escape a fire or raise the alarm.
